MUN – Model United Nations

I will tell you guys my MUN experience. First of all, I will give you some questions about what exactly MUN is. Do you know MUN stands for? Do you curious what exactly MUN established for? What should you do in MUN? Should I join MUN? Is it okay joining MUN for the first-timer like me? Which skill I have to improve to join MUN? If you are wondering about those questions, please read my story carefully and fully.

So, everyone here is the story. MUN stands for Model United Nations. Have you ever heard about MUN? If no, MUN is the United Nations simulation. All we do in MUN is as same as the United Nations do. We talk about global issues. What happen in the whole world? What problem that country has been facing and how to solve it? If the country could not solve it, then the United Nations will help them to solve their problem(s). That is UN established for.

Basically in the real UN, we can speak with our own language because the UN provides the translator for each country into the official language in UN, English. So, in MUN, we must speak English, for this is only simulation and the organizer did not provide the translator.

What should we do in MUN? well, we debate each delegate to solve the problem. We discuss about global issues. We represent our country in the UN conference.

Rule and policy every MUN is different. well, mine, when I was joining IMUN, we used “harvard style” What is Harvard style? The rule of MUN, for example during MUN we cannot use our media electronic for sure. In other MUN, some of them allow their delegates to use their gadgets, but in Harvard style, we couldn’t use kind of them.

We entered MUN committee session.

Well, before starting the committee, the chair will ask for having a roll call. Roll call is similar to attendance delegate in the committee. From country A to Z, the chair will ask one by one. How to check their attendance? The chair will ask delegate to vote whether “present and voting” or just “voting”. Well, it really doesn’t matter if you choose just “voting” or “present and voting” you still have to speak during the committee. So what exactly function of roll call? In the end of the conference, you will vote for Draft Resolution. If you choose “voting” you can say favor, against or abstain. But, if you choose “present and voting” you must vote favor or against, you cannot choose abstain. The is the difference between those. So, What should I choose “present and voting” or just “voting”? Well, it depends on your country’s policy. How do I know if my country in favor or against? You have to do research more:)

Next, after rolling call, at first, if the council has more than 1 topic they will ask which topic should be discussed first by voting. For example: 1st topic is Ensuring Proper Waste Management in South Asia and 2nd topic is Attaining Equal Access to Education & Health Services in Rural Area. The chair: first topic that we should discuss is Ensuring Proper Waste Management in South Asia, for those in favor please raise your placards. If we want to discuss it first, we raise placard, then the chair will be count whoever wants to have 1st topic to be discussed first. But, if the total all of delegates are 30, who have voted only 27, automatically the chair will ask for those in against(which means other delegate did not want to discuss 1 topic). However, if in favor greater in number, still the first topic to be discussed first.

After choosing the topic, the chair will ask for the motion. For example, I am as delegate of Australia. The chair: now, we move to open the motion, is there any motion on the floor please raise your placard. me: *raise my placard* delegate of Australia wants to have motion (IMPORTANT: you cannot immediately speak about your motion until the chair recognize you). the chair: yes, delegate of Australia (it means you have been recognized by the chair). me: delegate of Australia wants to talk about “Does South Asia has sophisticated waste treatment tool?” the chair: agree. is there any motion on the floor? *if no one has motion, the the chair will vote my motion. If all delegates agree with my motion, then the chair will open the debate, and motion’s passed.

However, before going to debate session, the chair will open for General Speaking List(GSL). FYI, GSL is important for those who really want to talk about their country problem. GSL is limited. So my advice if we want to be a part of GSL, we have to immediately raise our placard. (IMPORTANT: if you already raise your placard, do not immediately turn it down until the chair recognize you). People might say GSL is precious chance, you won’t miss it for sure^-^

After GSL, we move to Moderated Caucus(MC)/formal debate. Again, the chair will vote to open the debate. Every delegate has to vote yes, if no, lol what are you doing in MUN?. Then the debate starts. In MC, we talk about the motion that I already given at first. How to debate? for example, me: Delegate of Australia wants to say that South Asia is developing country, so there is no sophisticated treatment for them, however, we want every develop country to give a sophisticated treatment for South Asia. so, United States of America(as develop country): USA believes that a sophisticated treatment is not enough for South Asia, for maybe in their environment did not support or suit with the treatment. And so on~

After having an MC, other delegate willing to raise motion to suspend the meeting. If all delegate agree, then we have break.

There are many motions in MUN. These three take place at the beginning only. 1. Motion to open the floor (roll call takes place)
2. Motion to set the agenda> To set which what topic should be discussed first. For example, delegate of Australia want to set the agenda in topic “Does South Asia has a sophisticated waste treatment”.
3. Motion to set the speaker’s time> We have to specifically give time should be given during the conference. For example, Delegate of Australia want to set the speaker in topic “Does South Asia has a sophisticated waste treatment” in 10/1 (which means 10 mins in total min and 1 min speak will be given by 10 delegates) . And many more.. Sorry I’m lazy to write the rest of them:((((((( please kindly check link below, I’ll share it.

My MUN Experience

Hello, people! This is my first time on WordPress. I would love to write My MUN Experience in two languages, English and Bahasa so that many people will be understood. Plus, if you see {I will be explaining this in the next story about “MUN”} below that means I have to explain more about that in the MUN section specifically.

Actually, there are so much an MUN event which held both domestic and international with different names. Well, mine, I joint the IMUN (International Model United Nations) conference last month on November in Malaysia. It was my first time join MUN. I was so super excited at first. I have no idea why I want to join MUN, but one thing for sure is I want to have an experience. Well, honey we cannot buy an experience, right? So that I once asked my friends to join MUN as well. Unfortunately, some of them could not in. I went to Malaysia with my buddies: Candra and Abi (thank you guys for saying yes to this, love yall). They were there as first timer as well. So, without further ado let’s get the story started! IMUN held three days in private university in Malaysia.

First day coming IMUN.

We picked up by the organizer in the Kuala Lumpur City Central station at 9 a.m. We arrived in Taylor’s University by bus at 10 a.m. First agenda was opening ceremony at 10.30 a.m. till 12.30 p.m. Then, we had lunch (buffet). All the food was halal and delicious. I ate in University’s vibe. woohoo! I was shocking when I was around there. I have something in mind “I could not imagine when I go to college abroad. It will be going so much fun. Learn with friends in the green park. Enjoy the air. People here are amazing! I want to go college abroad!!!”

Next, we have MUN 101 & Zero Conference at 1 p.m. We started talking about what MUN exactly here. in MUN, we talk about the rule and policy. Important, every organizer have different rule and policy, however they must relate to United Nations rules and policy> {I will be explaining this in the next story about “MUN”}. in Zero Conference, we talked about what we should do when committee starts. What is committee? Committee is a small group of people chosen to represent a larger organization and either make decisions or collect information for it (Cambridge dictionary). Then, we have a tea break before going to have first committee.

I got Australia T_T

First Committee in the first-day MUN. Opening ceremony, 1 committee.

Firstly, I want you guys to know in the UN, they have many councils. But, in IMUN, we have World Trade Organization (WTO), World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Security Council (UNSC), International Court of Justice (ICJ), United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCF). [tbh, I GOT GOOSEBUMPS WHILE WRITING THOSE COUNCIL] I chose UN Development Programme (UNDP). Do not ask me how nervous I am, extremely. I really have no idea guys what I was going truly to say. T_T (Tips: you should do research as much as you can) thankfully, my chair explained very details of what we should do in the committee session. Each committee is presided over by a Chairperson (or Chair), whose role it is to keep the debate running. Most of us were first-timer, so our chair explained very details. So, in the UN, basically, they have two delegates to represent their country. But, in IMUN this time, they only have one delegate to represent their country. A delegate is a person sent or authorized to represent others, in particular, an elected representative sent to a conference (Oxford dictionary). Remember this is UN simulations, so we have to pretend like representing our country at the UN conference. Although I chose Indonesia and Switzerland, I got Australia to represent off. So, we started our first committee. In UNDP, there were two topics that we should discuss: Ensuring Proper Waste Management in South Asia and Attaining Equal Access to Education & Health Services in Rural Area. Before starting, the chair would like to have a roll call by voting first whether we present and voting or just present> {I will be explaining this in the next story about “MUN”}. We asked by the chair to choose which topic that should be discussed first. We chose first topic by voting and raising placard either against or favor. But, all delegates in favor chose first topic to be discussed first. After choosing the topic, delegates will be asked by the chair to raise motion. Motion is a specific action made by delegates to direct debate in a certain direction. There are many motions in MUN, again>{I will be explaining this in the next story about “MUN”}. After that, the chair asked all of us if we want to be part of general list> {I will be explaining this in the next story about “MUN”}. People might say General Speaking List (GSL) is a very chance for those to represent their country, and GSL is LIMITED. Then, we entered a session called “formal debate” or moderated caucus. Here we were talking about the motion which has raised by other delegate before. Then, we did argue about the solution for South Asia and so on. Unfortunately, time was up, so we have to continue next morning. I went home by bus with my buddies.

my day1

Day 2 – this was gonna be tough guys! Imagine, I’d have 3 committee sessions in a day.

So, as same as before, Every committee will start with a roll call first to choose whether want to “present and voting” or only just “voting”. Then, the chair asked all of us to raise new motion. Anyway, I was so happy because I was part of GSL. Thank God, I was braving myself to raise my placard when the chair asked “For those who want to be a part of GSL, please raise your placard” I went to the in front of the hall to talk about problem in Australia in 1min 30s. What a nervous^-^ then, we entered to the formal debate. Thankfully, other delegate asked to the chair to have an informal debate which means unmoderated caucus in 15mins. In unmoderated caucus, we talk diplomacy to other delegates and think about which blog that we have to in>{I will be explaining this in the next story about “MUN”}. After having an unmoderated causes followed by committee 3. Again, we have a roll call, then, raise motion, be part of GSL, and start the debate. In the end of committee 3, delegate of Philippines raise motion to suspend the meeting. So, we have a lunch at 1 p.m. After lunch, we still had one committee to go. *Fighting* in the last of committee 4, we have to find and decide which blog that we should in. Basically, one blog is enough, however, we have different thoughts so we all delegates decide to have two blogs during conference. Day two has finished, we continue it the next day.

My fellow delegates

Day three in IMUN. Still having 2 committee to go. Fighting! Closing ceremony.

As usual, we started the committee by having a roll call, but this time is different. There was no motion to open the debate and GSL. We were focusing on making a draft resolution. We only given around 20mins to make it:( Luckily, my team was awesome especially our sponsor delegate of Philippines. Sponsor is the country contributed many ideas (+-). After done with draft resolution, our sponsor which were delegate of Philippines and delegate of Antigua and Barbuda presented our blog to the other blog and the chair. Each blog has to present their blog anyway. So, we moved to the last committee which was committee 6. Finally! After having a presentation, we entered a amendment session>{I will be explaining this in the next story about “MUN”}. In the end of the last committee, we were voted again about the draft resolution that we’re gonna use to solve South Asia’s problem. I was “present” in the roll call, so I could vote either yes, no or against the draft resolution. So, I was super regret when the first blog (my other blog, I was blog 2) voted, I agreed to their draft resolutionT_T I should choose “NO”. however, the voting was 12 saying “yes”, 10 “no”, 1 “against” so the chair did not need to vote for the second blog. First blog won:(((((((((((((( I went the flat to changed our suit and tie into traditional dress. I wore kebaya:). The last agenda at IMUN, we have closing ceremony. which in this agenda, we have cultural night (many countries had participate in IMUN, so they have to perform their culture) and awards session. I got nothing but an experience in IMUN. yey! —the end—

Mohon maaf ya kalo bahasa Indo nya kurang baku dan disingkat2 😦 langsung aja mulai My MUN Experience.

Kali pertamanya ikut ginian guys jd seneng bgt:D Jangan tanya kenapa ikut MUN, ya sederhana alesannya pengen dpt pengalaman aja. Ohya banyak bgt yg bilang ikut MUN ini dikhususin anak HI aja, eits guys aku anak pendidikan kok, emang sih rata2 yg ikut ini anak2 HI pasti. Ya karna MUN ini berhubungan dgn diplomatik. Aku ikut IMUN ini bertiga sm temen kelas kuliah ku. Jadi lgsg mulai aja yaaa!!

Contoh debatnya tu, perwakilan suatu negara menyampaikan mosinya tetapi negara lain tidak terima, saling adu argument gitu, seru bgt dah liatnya:D.

Selesai hari kedua. lanjut besok

sesi UMC dan blog ku:))
Lunch kita +- enak makannya:D btw ni duduk sm Chair ICJ woy! keren bgt gak sih dia tu?
Betenya dengerin orang ngmging diplomasi.

Hari terakhir.

Selesaiiiiii~~

My fellow delegates in UNDP

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
